Environmental Initiatives

In 2017 the Village was honored by the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus with an award recognizing Algonquin as a statewide leader in environmental stewardship. Specifically, the Village was recognized for its model programs in water conservation, volume-based solid waste program, tree preservation, and sustainability planning.

Additionally, the Village started participation in a new program through the National Wildlife Federation to promote wise conservation stewardship, including the protection and maintenance of pollinators and their habitats in parks and open spaces. As a result, the Village constructed the Spella Park Pollinator Project, which involved restoring 9 ½ acres of turf grass into a wildflower extravaganza, specific to native pollinator species, with educational classes and site visits provided by the Algonquin Public Library. This project fits into the Village’s larger initiative of restoring open spaces to native areas. Over the past 11 years the Village has undertaken over 135 acres of native restoration projects.

And finally, the Arbor Day Foundation announced that the Village was named a Tree City USA community for the 22nd consecutive year. Through the professional commitment to its program, Algonquin is proudly recognized as a leader in urban forestry.

Recreation

Algonquin provides park and recreation services to the community with 21 parks, a swimming pool and splash pad, community center (Historic Village Hall), and an expansive trail system. The Events and Recreation Division offers nearly 400 programs and events annually. Portions of Algonquin are also served by the Dundee Township Park District and Huntley Park District.

In 2017 the Village completed Snapper Field improvements including upgrades to the basketball/hockey rink, extension of the pool deck that connects it to the basketball court, additional seating areas and adding a walking path. The Village also opened the Quarry View Disc Golf Course located in the Algonquin Lakes subdivision.  This course is recognized by the Professional Disc Golf Association as a beginner-friendly course that can be made more challenging by playing the walking paths as out of bounds.

Shopping

Algonquin is the regional shopping destination in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago.  With regional retail and restaurant sites in the hot Randall Road corridor, great locations for neighborhood retail and service uses in three State Highway corridors, or unique Downtown boutique settings, Algonquin offers the right location for your business.

Randall Road is the region’s retail hot spot. Randall Road features Algonquin Commons, the largest outdoor lifestyle and fashion center in the Chicago region, and the Galleria, featuring freestanding stores in a pedestrian environment. Randall Road also features all of the favorite big-box superstores and grocery store anchored strip centers. Randall is the area’s bistro, offering a variety of restaurants from fast food and quick-service favorites, to fine dining and local icons. With traffic counts rapidly approaching 50,000 vehicles per day, and growing average incomes that already exceed $100,000 per year, Randall Road is the best choice for retail in the far northwest suburbs.

Old Town is the Gem of the Fox River Valley.  Nestled between the Fox River and the beautiful wooded bluffs, downtown Algonquin features a boutique culture with small shops in a quaint historic setting.  Old Town is a showpiece, with majestic parks, easy access to amenities and recreation, and regular happenings such as concerts, festivals, vendor fairs and public art events.  Not one to rest on its laurels, the Village is reinvesting millions in rebuilding public infrastructure and improving parking, way finding, public parking and other amenities to further enhance the downtown experience.
